GOVERNANCE (GVNC)
An A/V noise duo and writing collaboration with Rebecca Uliasz — database aesthetics, speculative media, and live audiovisual performance.
GOVERNANCE (often stylized as GVNC) is an ongoing A/V noise duo and writing collaboration with Rebecca Uliasz, who is now faculty in the Department of Philosophy at Case Western Reserve University. We began working together as doctoral cohort mates in Computational Media, Arts & Cultures at Duke University.
The collaboration spans live audiovisual noise performance, installation, interface design, speculative database aesthetics, and co-authored scholarship. Major works produced as GVNC include:
- a timeline for the end of time (2022) — a four-channel generative A/V installation engaging the recursivity of apocalyptic narratives
- synthball (2017) — a wireless audio/video controller for gestural and play-based multimedia performances
- SOMA — a speculative database aesthetics of ImageNet, performed as both a live noise work and a theoretical intervention
- GVNC - our 2020 album, comprised of excerpts from live performances in 2018 and 2019
Our co-authored publications include “SOMA: A Speculative Database Aesthetics of ImageNet” (Brill, 2024), “Special Intellectual Zone” (ARPJA, 2021), “Sunsetting the Species” (Queer.Archive.Work, 2020), and “CROSS-WIRES” (Studies in Arts and Humanities, 2019).
While our collaboration has become less frequent since we moved to different cities, GVNC remains an active practice. We are likely to continue producing work together as opportunities arise.
